Treatment for Kratom Use Disorder

Kratom and its derivatives, such as 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH), are plant-derived substances that can produce stimulant effects at lower doses and opioid-like effects at higher doses.

While some people use kratom to self-manage pain, anxiety, or opioid withdrawal, regular use can lead to tolerance, physical dependence, withdrawal symptoms, and, in some individuals, kratom use disorder.

At Magnolia Medical Group, we provide evidence-based outpatient evaluation and treatment for individuals struggling with problematic kratom use. Although there are currently no FDA-approved medications specifically for kratom use disorder, treatment is based on established addiction medicine practices.

Care begins with a comprehensive assessment and may include motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), relapse prevention planning, treatment of co-occurring mental health conditions, and close clinical follow-up.

For patients experiencing significant withdrawal or opioid-like dependence, medications such as buprenorphine-naloxone may be considered when clinically appropriate, based on the best available medical evidence and current addiction medicine practices.

Our goal is to provide compassionate, individualized care that helps patients safely reduce or stop kratom use and achieve long-term recovery.
